Victor Hugo Pontes
Despite curtailing the original Saint-Saëns title, Carnival uses a similar composition technique, if in reverse: several Portuguese contemporary composers will create an original theme associated with the fourteen musical movements in The Carnival of the Animals. In order to do that, they will adopt another artistic method which was at its most popular in 20th century Europe, and which inspired many other artistic movements: the exquisite corpse. In other words, in Carnival each of the guest composers will start their composition at the end of the previous theme, carrying it over to the next one. As well as more technical aspects – concerning music composition, the articulation of concepts within and between each movement, the alignment or contrast between each guest composer –, we aim to address a host of other subjects in Carnival. There is the inevitable question of the symbolic meaning – both Christian and Pagan – of Carnival, alongside all other cultural and philosophical issues surrounding this symbol.
